چکیده

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used to store, manipulate and visualize both spatial and non-spatial data. Because of their data manipulating capabilities, GIS have been linked to different simulation models in different research areas and are commonly used for both surface and ground water modeling. Unfortunately this has been done mainly with proprietary GIS which are expensive and which do not provide access to their source code thus making them hard to customize. In order to overcome these problems, a module was created in the Open Source Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS) GIS to integrate it with the finite difference groundwater flow model MODFLOW, to take full advantage of the GIS capabilities. The results obtained with this module, when compared to those obtained with an existing MODFLOW pre and post-processor show that it can be used to develop groundwater flow models using uniform grid spacing on the horizontal plane. This module provides a tool for groundwater flow modeling to those users who cannot afford the commercially available processors and/or to those who wish to develop their models within a GIS.

Geoinformatics and cartographic analysis, based on modeling and mapping of the microclimate and groundwater flow

The study of the groundwater resources and their properties are very important due to the vast desert areas and arid conditions. Given the current situation in Iran, the water supply is one of the most important territorial and environmental problems. In this study, groundwater resources were surveyed and mapped in Yazd Province and their properties were modeled to determine their effectiveness...

Investigating future changes in groundwater quantity and quality in the Khash alluvial aquifer through numerical groundwater flow and solute transport modeling

The Khash alluvial aquifer, in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, supplies the water needed for agriculture, drinking, and industry in the Khash area. In order to predict the future status of groundwater level and water quality, and to find aquifer management solutions, groundwater flow and solute transport models were developed using MODFLOW and MT3DMS. GMS 10.3 was used to develop the model. Ca...

MODELING OF GROUNDWATER FLOW OVER SLOPING BEDS IN RESPONSE TO CONSTANT RECHARGE AND STREAM OF VARYING WATER LEVEL

This paper presents an analytical model characterizing unsteady groundwater flow in an unconfined aquifer resting on a sloping impervious bed. The aquifer is in contact with a constant water level at one end. The other end is connected to a stream whose level is increasing form an initial level to a final level at a known exponentially decaying function of time. Moreover, the aquifer is repleni...

A System Dynamics Model to Conserve Arid Region Water Resources through Aquifer Storage and Recovery in Conjunction with a Dam

Groundwater depletion poses a significant threat in arid and semi-arid areas where rivers are usually ephemeral and groundwater is the major source of water. The present study investigated whether an effective water resources management strategy, capable of minimizing evaporative water losses and groundwater depletion while providing water for expanded agricultural activities, can be achieved t...
